What an InBody Scan Actually Tells You (and Why It Matters)

Beyond the Scale

An InBody scan uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure your body composition in about 60 seconds. Unlike a standard scale, it doesn't just tell you how much you weigh. It tells you what you're made of.

Key Metrics Explained

Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM): The total weight of your skeletal muscles. This is the number you want to see increase or stay stable during a weight loss program. More muscle means a faster metabolism and better functional strength.

Body Fat Mass (BFM): The total weight of fat in your body. This is what you want to see decrease. But context matters: some fat is essential for hormone production and organ protection.

Percent Body Fat (PBF): Your fat mass as a percentage of total weight. This is a more meaningful metric than BMI because it accounts for muscle mass. A muscular person with a "high" BMI might have a healthy body fat percentage.

Visceral Fat Level: Fat stored around your organs. This is the most dangerous type of fat and is strongly correlated with heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Even people who appear thin can have high visceral fat.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): How many calories your body burns at rest. This number is largely determined by your lean muscle mass.

How We Use InBody Data

Every client at Foskaris Wellness gets an InBody scan at intake and at regular intervals throughout their program. We use the data to calibrate nutrition plans, track progress, and make adjustments. If you're losing fat but also losing muscle, we catch it immediately and adjust your plan.

Get Your Baseline

Whether or not you start a program with us, knowing your body composition is valuable. It's the difference between guessing and knowing. And once you know, you can make informed decisions about your health.
